00;00;00;00 - 00;00;34;27
Speaker 1
Any time you've sat in on a job interview or met with a career coach or filled out a resume, there's a question that you've been asked or probably been asked. And granted, it is a fair question. But here's the problem with it. The way you answer this question could be what's keeping you stuck in a career rut? It's your answer to this question that might be leading you to jump from one career to another, hoping to find, you know, the perfect job, the perfect boss, the perfect workplace.

00;00;34;28 - 00;01;08;02
Speaker 1
And you know, you might have a new title or new office, but sooner or later you're back doing the same energy draining tasks and you're still unfulfilled, still exhausted, and still wondering why you can't find a career that leads you up. One that's more in line with your calling. And my friend, in this episode today we are going to stop this cycle and stop the madness, and we are going to venture into waypoint number three of the Discovering Your Calling Academy.

00;01;08;02 - 00;01;35;24
Speaker 1
In our eight week challenge.

00;01;35;27 - 00;02;00;18
Speaker 1
So have you ever experienced this scenario of career hopping? And if not you, I'm sure you probably know a job hopper. You know, it's when you're constantly changing jobs looking for that perfect career. And obviously, it could be from any of a many things. In fact, it could be from one of the eight steps in the Discovering Your Calling academy that's missing.

00;02;00;22 - 00;02;25;26
Speaker 1
But often this job jumping cycle is caused by how you answer that seemingly innocent question. Now you're probably wondering, okay, Sherry, what is this question? And I am going to get to that in a minute. But first, let's talk. I want to share a somewhat embarrassing story. This happened to be recently, and I call it The Wasted Day.

00;02;25;29 - 00;02;48;08
Speaker 1
And you know, years ago when I first started, say, years ago, four years ago and makes it sound like ten years ago, 20 years ago, but four years ago, when I first stepped into this new career change for myself, I made the mistake. Many new entrepreneurs make. And that was I spent a lot of money on a customized website.

00;02;48;08 - 00;03;13;01
Speaker 1
I hired somebody to do this for me and I. It was built upon that first brilliant business idea I had, which was Uncharted Entrepreneurs. I was working with entrepreneurs and being more strategic partner for them, and it was a beautiful website. But within a year, I shift focused and I decided I wanted to rebrand and focus more on leadership.

00;03;13;03 - 00;03;39;20
Speaker 1
So I made the same mistake again. I mean, I hired somebody else to create a whole new website, and it was all on the leadership. And you know what I'll say? I didn't even like that website. But not even six months later, 18 months later, you know, a year later, at the most, I realized, like, this wasn't really the right direction for me.

00;03;39;22 - 00;04;05;06
Speaker 1
And I decided to rebrand again. And this is when I finally figured out that my calling is helping you find your calling. Now, there was common thread in there is all about strengths and stuff, but each time the website needed to be redone. Now, at this point, I'd finally learned my lesson was like I am not going to pay another website designer to revamp my website again.

00;04;05;11 - 00;04;27;13
Speaker 1
So I decided I could do this myself. I could learn the skills needed. I figured I'm smart, I'm creative, I'm really tech savvy that I'll just do this. How hard could it be? And my plan was pretty simple. I decided I was going to just block out an entire day and knock out this brand new website. I had bought this $99 DIY website program.

00;04;27;16 - 00;05;04;10
Speaker 1
I signed up for a new server, and I dove into watching a bunch of YouTube tutorials. But here's what happened. By the end of the day, I was just completely drained. My head was pounding, my energy was gone, and by 7 p.m. I'm like, what am I doing? What a wasted day. I immediately canceled that new server, got my $99 refund, and just went in and made a few tweaks to my existing website, and decided it would just have to be good enough until I decided I was ready to hire someone with the actual expertise.

00;05;04;13 - 00;05;33;05
Speaker 1
Now, could I have done it? Sure, I could have spent days or even weeks learning the skill needed to build that website. But here's the thing it didn't bring me joy. In fact, it did the opposite. It sucked the life out of me, leaving nothing for the things I truly love, like working with people like you, my clients, writing, doing a podcast, spending time with my family and I had to remind myself in that moment something I tell my clients all the time.

00;05;33;09 - 00;06;08;10
Speaker 1
It's just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should. And that's what we're talking about in today's episode. And on this waypoint, it's about the skills. And maybe you feel like this every day at your job. How I felt that one day that you've gotten proficient at your job, but it's not fulfilling you. It's not sparking joy, and you're going home exhausted and tired and miserable, and you have nothing left to give your family, your hobbies, maybe searching for your career, your ideal career in calling.

00;06;08;15 - 00;06;37;12
Speaker 1
And here's where things get really crazy, my friend, is that this is a mistake I see people make over and over and over again. When searching for a new career or creating their calling. And this mistake happens when and how we answer the question that I spoke of earlier. And often we've done this with the guidance of career coaches that should know better.

00;06;37;12 - 00;07;02;07
Speaker 1
But here's the thing if you don't think it through, it's an easy mistake to make. And what is this question that I'm talking about? It's that question that's asked all the time. What skills do you have? You've probably been asked that for your current job. Maybe you were asked to when you filled out the resume. Maybe again, if you worked with a career coach, they have asked you that question.

00;07;02;09 - 00;07;33;15
Speaker 1
Now, there's nothing really wrong with the question itself. What's wrong is how we answer the question. Because what I see happen a lot is we answer the question without really thinking about the skills we're about to tell somebody we have, and we we don't keep in mind that just because we're capable of doing something, even if we're good at it, it doesn't mean it's your calling, because when somebody asks us this question of what skills do you have?

00;07;33;17 - 00;07;53;07
Speaker 1
We normally excitedly rattle off all the skills that we've learned over the course of our life, which can be a lot, but we don't stop to think that, wait a minute, that skill is actually what's draining the life out of me right now. And you just told somebody else that that's a skill you have. So now they might hire you to do that same skill again.

00;07;53;10 - 00;08;23;15
Speaker 1
So do you see how this creates this crazy cycle? Now, before we get into how to stop this madness, I just want to pause here and remind you, especially if maybe you're new to the podcast, you're just joining in, that we are actually on an eight week challenge of the Discovering Your Calling Academy. The Discovering Your Calling Academy is my signature program that I created two years ago to help people find their calling, and we're currently on waypoint number three.

00;08;23;18 - 00;08;49;24
Speaker 1
That's what we're going to be talking about today. And it's all about skills, but not just any skills. It's skills that energize you. And I'm going to give you the steps on how to figure that out so that when you are asked that question, your answer is insightful and it's the right answer that will lead you towards that career that's more in line with your calling or will lead you to decide that, hey, I need to just go create my own career and start my own business.

00;08;49;25 - 00;09;19;27
Speaker 1
And as we're journeying on this eight week challenge, again, a reminder that each waypoint or phase is leading you toward a bigger picture and completing what I like to call your calling puzzle. And I want you to imagine, as we go through these phases that you're holding a big basket, and with each activity that you do in each lesson, we go through that you're just collecting these clues and you're dropping these pieces of the puzzle into your basket.

00;09;19;29 - 00;09;41;20
Speaker 1
Now, some of these pieces are definitely going to be key puzzle pieces for you. Others may even be the wrong puzzle for you. And we'll toss those on the side later. But for now, just keep gathering them and putting them in the basket. Before we get into the skill set energy audit, I want to share something I've been doing every morning to help increase my own energy.

00;09;41;20 - 00;10;16;24
Speaker 1
It's my little shot of magic mind along with my morning coffee. Magic mind is a mental performance shot that contains a variety of natural ingredients, including ceremonial matcha, which is the highest grade of matcha. I've heard, and a vitamins B2, B3, and B12. And this little green shot that I take every morning not only helps me with focus, but it keeps my energy up all morning without the caffeine jitters, and I enjoy taking it every morning, which is why I decided to accept their sponsorship.

00;10;17;00 - 00;10;52;08
Speaker 1
This means that I can offer you a 20% discount on a one time order, or a subscription, but I advise you check out all the ingredients for yourself and see what you think. It's a great way to get a natural boost without sugar and the many energy drinks that are out there. So head over to WW magic mind.com, backslash d, y C and use my code DC 20 to get 20% off your first order.

00;10;52;10 - 00;11;15;02
Speaker 1
Let me know what you think. Okay, so back to today to waypoint three. How do you discern whether a skill is part of your calling or not? And we do that by doing what I like to call the skill set energy audit. And I'm going to take you through all the steps to do that. It's actually pretty simple one.

00;11;15;05 - 00;11;32;02
Speaker 1
Last week we talked about Vision Earring, which I know for a lot of people, they either you either love it or you don't. You find it challenging or you just love vision. Earring. This one's pretty cut and dry. There will be some steps that might take you out of your comfort zone, but it's a pretty simple process to take.

00;11;32;04 - 00;11;56;20
Speaker 1
But before we jump into those steps, let's talk about the difference between a skill and a talent. Now, in the first wave point number one, we talked about Cliftonstrengths Gallup's cliftonstrengths assessment and talents and why they're important. And for this whole journey. And I kind of want to bring you back to those, but also in the context of how does it compare to a skill.

00;11;56;24 - 00;12;37;25
Speaker 1
Now, according according to Merriam Webster, a skill is the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily, and execution or performance. It's a learned power of doing something competently, a developed aptitude or ability. So in simpler terms, skills are learned. You could develop them with time and effort. On the other hand, when we look at Gallup, how Gallup defines talent, as they say, talents are naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied.

00;12;38;00 - 00;13;07;21
Speaker 1
So basically, talents are something you're born with. They're part of who you are. I like to call it your talent DNA. And when you combine your natural talents with knowledge, skills and practice, that's the investment part of talents. Over time, you turn those talents into your superpower strengths. So the magic formula is talents, times. Investment, which has to do with learning skills, equals strengths.

00;13;07;26 - 00;13;36;28
Speaker 1
And Gallup defines a strength. And how we're going to define it through this course is the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance on a specific activity. So near-perfect performance. Because when we can work within our strengths, that's where we find true fulfillment. So let's wrap this up here before we jump into the energy audit. Talents are inborn. They're unique abilities.

00;13;37;01 - 00;14;02;04
Speaker 1
They're often hidden until they're brought out in the right environment. And I believe these or God given gifts that each of us has, you know, a specific set of talents that only that are unique to us. And event Gallup shows that the chances of someone else having the exact same top five cliftonstrengths themes as you, in the exact same order, is one and 33 million.

00;14;02;06 - 00;14;34;20
Speaker 1
So these are these are very unique to you where, whereas skills are learned and with enough time and effort, anyone can develop a skill. But remember, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. And again, this is where many people go wrong with career search that when searching for that next job, they highlight the skills because they're just they're easier to explain.

00;14;34;20 - 00;15;06;24
Speaker 1
Basically. You know, it's easy to rattle off. What were the skills that you learned at your last career and bring them forward to with you? But when we only focus on skills that can lead to that misaligned careers where again, you're good at something but you're not energized by it. And the key to a fulfilling, energizing career, which I know is what you're looking for, is finding one that allows you to lean into your natural talents while developing the skills necessary to excel.

00;15;06;27 - 00;15;50;20
Speaker 1
That's how you find your true calling. And again, your talent. DNA is unique to you. So this means that even if someone else learned the same skills as you, no one will approach those skills in the exact same way. Your unique talents shape how you use and apply those skills. So, you know, for instance, I in the book I share how one of our client, one of our students, wanted to, start a running club, and she wanted to take the approach of helping people get, you know, you know, people, women over 40 get off the couch and just start using running more as a therapy, more as a mental well-being.

00;15;50;23 - 00;16;30;22
Speaker 1
And that was kind of the approach she took. She's, you know, higher in empathy and and relationship building. And she really wanted to just help these women just have better longevity for their life and just realize that by exercising a movement, they're going to feel better mentally and physically. So she's going to take her natural talents and teach the skill of running in a different way versus someone else who might be more, have natural talents that are more competitive and and love the learning and input where they love to just take all the information they've ever learned about running and share it with others.

00;16;30;24 - 00;16;57;09
Speaker 1
And because they're highly competitive, they're naturally going to attract others who are highly competitive. So their approach may be working with that competitive runner, whether it be high school, college or the next. You know, Olympian, and teach them what they know about nutrition and form and speed and weightlifting. So they're going to take a whole different approach that aligns with their natural talents.

00;16;57;13 - 00;17;17;14
Speaker 1
Now, both of these coaches may be teaching the exact same running skills and using the same skills that they've learned for running, but they do it in a different way that aligns with who they are and their natural talent DNA. So does that make sense? I hope so, but just remember your natural talents influence how and why you do something.

00;17;17;18 - 00;17;41;00
Speaker 1
Now you may be thinking, well, life experience also plays into that scenario. Absolutely. And we will be diving into that very, very soon in the Discovering Your Calling Academy challenge. But today we're just really honing in on the skills. And remember, skills can be learned, but your talents are what make you you and they're what will guide you toward that career you love.

00;17;41;03 - 00;18;06;23
Speaker 1
So as you identify your skills and most importantly, the ones that will you enjoy and will energize you, which we're going to get into in a minute. Remember not to lose sight of your talents. They really need to be worked together. So are you ready, my friend, to discover what those skills are that can help lead to your true calling and how you should answer that question of what skills do you have?

00;18;06;25 - 00;18;29;01
Speaker 1
Okay, I hope so, because now we're going to jump into this self work portion of this, of this waypoint. And that's how to do an energy audit. Now if you listen to the very first kickoff call kickoff podcast episode, you know that I said to get the most out of this challenge, you need to invest the time and energy to do the work.

00;18;29;04 - 00;18;54;25
Speaker 1
And this is the work that will help you determine and discern which skills will lead you to your calling. So there's four steps we're going to go through here. The first step is just step one is just what I call creating the skills bring up. And if you grab your notebook or if you've downloaded the Discover Your Calling workbook, you're just going to brain dump some thoughts.

00;18;54;25 - 00;19;14;29
Speaker 1
And I have three questions I'm going to help you go through. And then one action step to take in regards to the brain dump. So question number one. And again just like we did with some of these other steps and or other questions in the last episode, I recommend you just kind of listen right now and then come back and really spend time on each of these questions.

00;19;14;29 - 00;19;36;25
Speaker 1
So you can just write down the question and then come back and really answer them when you have more time. So question number one for the skill set brain dump is when was the last time you experienced flow? Now flow, if you're not familiar, is that wonderful state when you get so absorbed in what you're doing, that time just flies by and in a really good way.

00;19;36;25 - 00;19;58;07
Speaker 1
Not in the way I had experienced when I was trying to do my website. Time flew by, but it was not flow. So it's when you're working on something that just so engaging that, you know, even stopping to eat or, you know, go to the bathroom is like an unwelcome interruption. And when you're all done, you're thinking like, oh, when can I do this again?

00;19;58;12 - 00;20;21;29
Speaker 1
So what were you doing the last time you experienced flow? And it could be work related, a hobby, something at home, anything at all in volunteering. So what? What were those things? If there's more than one. So when was the last time you experienced flow? What were you doing? Question number two. What activities bring you joy and you wish you could do more of them?

00;20;22;02 - 00;20;40;11
Speaker 1
So think about those activities that just like you are and when you think about doing them, you can't wait to you know, something's coming up. Maybe on Friday you have the day blocked off to do this activity and you're so excited about it. Or when it's all done, you, you stop and think, when could I do that again?

00;20;40;13 - 00;21;02;09
Speaker 1
And it could be as simple as reading a book, hiking cookie, something, a project you're working on, you know, in your current career or that you've done in the past in a career. It could be something creative, learning new things, spending time in nature. So what are what are those activities that bring you joy and you wish you could do more of them?

00;21;02;12 - 00;21;22;15
Speaker 1
And again, it can be career at work or past jobs or it could be hobbies, anything at all. Then question number three for our brain dump. What do your friends ask you to help with? What do your friends recognize in you? You know, what's that thing that they're always asking you to help? Is it organizing their home?

00;21;22;15 - 00;21;43;24
Speaker 1
Is it decorating? Is it simply just listening? Are you known to be a good listener? Are you great at, putting an outfit together? And they always want you to go shopping with them. Maybe they just, They look to you as that friend that when they need to vent, they can just grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine with and bet because you're such a great listener, maybe you're always have a wealth of advice to give.

00;21;43;25 - 00;22;04;01
Speaker 1
So what is it that your friends are always asking you to help them with? Drop those down and here's a second part to that same question is I highly recommend you actually go out and ask your friends. Ask at any spy friends, coworkers, or family members what skills they see in you, and they're going to give you the most insightful answers.

00;22;04;01 - 00;22;26;27
Speaker 1
And you can frame the question like this. You can say, if you hired me for a day, what would you want me to help with? Or if you were struggling with something and knew I could help, what would that be? And really pay attention to what they say. Because often we don't recognize our own talents and strengths and skills because they come so naturally to us.

00;22;26;27 - 00;22;48;01
Speaker 1
And people see, tend to see different skills in us, and we even see in ourselves again, especially if it is something that comes so easy or routine to us. So just have fun with this process. Don't you know your friends are going to be flattered that you ask them, so don't be afraid to ask the question. So again, if you hired me for a day, what would you want me to help you with?

00;22;48;01 - 00;23;13;20
Speaker 1
Or you can rephrase it. If you were struggling with something and knew I could help, what would that be? Now that being said, a little bit of caution here is don't feel obligated to pursue something just because someone else suggested. For instance, one of my Discovering Your Calling Academy students works in the accounting field right now, but that is not her calling.

00;23;13;23 - 00;23;39;08
Speaker 1
But her friends naturally said you could help me with my taxes but being. But tax preparation is definitely not something that lights her up, and that's why she was working with me. So sometimes our friends may just ask the more common answer it in the more common sense way. So those are the four steps where your brain don't just, you know, really think about when was the last time you were in flow?

00;23;39;12 - 00;24;02;01
Speaker 1
What activities bring you joy that you wish you could do more of, what your friends ask you to help them with, and then go out and really ask your friends what do they see in you? So that's step one. Just create this breakdown. Then step two is you're going to take all of this, this evidence, all of these things that came up in that first part.

00;24;02;03 - 00;24;29;03
Speaker 1
And you're going to categorize these skills, tasks or activities by whether or not you enjoy them or not. And really take a hard look at this, and take a look to it. All the skills that you've even done at work that you're currently doing, do you enjoy this or is it just something that you're good at? And if you don't have the Discovering Your Calling Academy workbook yet, you can still download that.

00;24;29;05 - 00;24;59;11
Speaker 1
Just go over to D C workbook. All one word dot. Great.com. So deep workbook dot great the number 8.com. And download the workbook. There's a page in there where you can actually categorize these under those two boxes. Do you even enjoy this or is it just something you're good at. Then you're going to look pick five of the skills in that box of enjoy or the energy audit.

00;24;59;15 - 00;25;22;29
Speaker 1
And the energy audit is just simply where we pay close attention to what activities actually energizes and what drain us. Because here's the thing. Sometimes we've been doing these things so much, and we think there's a thing that we enjoy doing, but when we really pay attention, they're not the right thing. So this is how you do the energy audit.

00;25;22;29 - 00;25;44;28
Speaker 1
And again in the workbook there's a page for this. But you can, you know for yourself you're going to rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10, one being read and ten being exhilarating. And what you do is as you go through your day and when you're asked to do these tasks, really monitor your energy level.

00;25;45;03 - 00;26;11;14
Speaker 1
Does it align with, you know, you're exhilarated. You're it's super fun. What are you drained before? After? During doing this skill or this activity and just pay attention to how you feel. Then step number five is just highlight what stands out to you, which skills align with your natural talents and energize you. These, my friend, are the big clues to your calling.

So look back at that page circle. Highlight. Make know again what skills align with your natural talent and they energized you. So that's how you do this energy audit. So again I'll run through these steps real quick. You're going to do your skill set brain dump by asking, you know, going through the different questions and asking your friends about things and really, you know, thinking about what are the skills you do all the time, the activities you do all the time.

00;26;37;17 - 00;27;00;22
Speaker 1
Step two is you're going to categorize them. Do you enjoy this or is it just something you're good at? Step three is you're going to run the energy audit. Step four is, really paying attention to it and highlighting what stands out. Step four is to really monitor each one with the 1 to 10, sorry. Step three was to select the five for your energy audit.

00;27;00;22 - 00;27;27;02
Speaker 1
Step four is then to rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10, and step five is to highlight what stands out to you. Now during this exercise, I often get asked is it a hobby or you're calling? And briefly, in a nutshell, it's again, we have to really discern here because sometimes there are things that we're good at and we enjoy doing, but it doesn't mean there are calling.

00;27;27;02 - 00;27;48;28
Speaker 1
Like, for instance, I love to cook, but I don't want to own a restaurant because the rest of the work that comes with managing a restaurant would not bring me joy. I'd rather keep cooking as my hobby for my friends and family, so it's really just being discerning on whether or not turning a hobby into a career makes sense for you or not.

00;27;49;05 - 00;28;21;27
Speaker 1
And again, it would be looking at the all the skill sets and tasks and activities that go along with what would happen if you turn that hobby into a career. But sometimes it is the right answer. So I know it's kind of confusing, but it's really just really being, discerning and real with yourself. So as we close out this episode, I want to remind you that these exercises are just designed to raise your awareness and gather those puzzle pieces that will guide you toward your calling, and some key takeaways.

So before we move on from this, waypoint is number one. Remember, just because you can do something doesn't mean it's what you're meant to do. Number two, keep your cliftonstrengths talent themes in mind. And remember, even if you enjoy a particular activity, if it doesn't align with your natural talents, it won't provide long term satisfaction. You will eventually grow restless, anxious, or unfulfilled.

00;28;51;10 - 00;29;14;14
Speaker 1
And number three, the next time someone asks you what skills do you have, make sure you rattle off the ones that you not only do well, but the ones that energize you. Now, once you've done this energy audit, I would love for you to pop over to the Discover Your Calling Academy Challenge Facebook group and share your results.
